Our friends at Music Video Distributors have released a lot of cool stuff over the past year, but nothing like the upcoming three-DVD set Don’t Forget The Motor City. Scheduled for March 18, 2008 release, the collection features 100 classic videos rescued from the vaults of Hitsville, USA! The Motown label had its roots in the dirty R&B and funky soul of the Motor City, and label founder Berry Gordy Jr had an undeniable ear for talent. Based on late-60s chart-toppers like the Supremes or the Temptations, the label is sometimes dismissed by vacuous hipsters as too pop-oriented and not as soulful as the Stax family in Memphis, but the stellar line-up of talented represented on this DVD set should put that fallacy to rest.

A partial list of the performers you’ll find on Don’t Forget The Motor City includes such well-known Motown front-liners as Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, Mary Wells, the Supremes and the Marvelettes along with lesser-known hitmakers like Edwin Starr, Kim Weston and Bettye Lavette. There is also a whole bunch of obscure but ultra-cool soul stars featured on these discs as well, talented folks like Willie Hutch, Chuck Jackson, the Contours, Earl Van Dyke and many more that are well-known and appreciated by crate-digging record collectors worldwide. Billy Preston, who became a star through his association with the Beatles, was first a Motown artist and is represented by a couple of videos on the set, including a duet with underrated Detroit diva Syreeta. If yoou have a hankerin’ for that sweet soul music, enjoy three-hours of classic Motown with Don’t Forget The Motor City!
