It’s the moment that we’ve all been waiting for: on August 7, 2007 the good folks at Music Video Distributors will be releasing a special edition of the documentary Hated, filmmaker Todd Phillips’ unvarnished look at the life of punk rock icon G.G. Allin. This special 60-minute DVD features artwork submitted by fans, the final cover design chosen by MVD, Phillips and Allin’s brother Merle to grace the DVD package. You can see a gallery of the artwork submitted for the contest here (be forewarned that there are graphic images).

As for what’s inside the package, expect an in-depth and disturbing look at Allin’s life and controversial career, including interviews with Murder Junkies band members Dino Sex and brother Merle, a rare interview with G.G.’s mother, track-by-track commentary and lots of Allin’s incendiary music. Completed in 1993, shortly before Allin’s inevitable death by O.D., Hated was Phillips first film, the Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and director best known for hit comedies like Old School and Road Trip.

As for Allin, if you’re not familiar with this caustic and yet influential performer, you should be if you care a whit about rock music. Allin wasn’t the most talented kid to ever take the stage, but he was the most outrageous, engaging in stunts while performing like smearing himself with excrement or beating himself (or an audience member) half to death, that resulted in his act being banned at clubs and colleges up and down the east coast. Allin had been arrested over 50 times for a variety of crimes, including rape, assault, indecent exposure and disorderly conduct. Hated is the final word on this controversial performer’s years in the spotlight.
